Discharge means you have an injury which precludes your performance of duty, and not enough for retirement.
Retriement on the other hand means you have an injury, which
precludes your duty so drastically with enough time and service, you are retired with a pension for that injury. A good example of this is Type 1/Type 2 Diabetes having occured on active duty. With the years you would be retired, no real years of service, you are discharged.

Retirement is for people who have at least 20 years in service and a discharge is for those who do not have 20 years.
Either way – compensation for medical disability is handled by the VA.
The Colonel was medically retired, with 21 years, due to a brain tumor, and given 100% disability.
A person in their first 4-8 years would expect to receive a medical discharge.
Either way, each would receive certain benefits, and disability payments, from the VA.
First of all, there is NO SUCH THING AS A MEDICAL DISCHARGE.
Only an Administrative Discharge, for medical reasons.
Your discharge will be characterized by your service up to that point.
There are to many variables to even go into. You need to give more information, such as medical problem, years in service, etc.
You can be given a Medical retirement at less than 20 years of service.
Jessica Lynch was retired from the Army as a Pvt with less than two years of service. It happens all the time.
You best information is going to come from you own Drs and the personnel at Medical Release. Also contact the VA or a Veterans Org such as VFW or American Legion, they can be of great assistance in filing for VA Disability.
